Family Literacy

Assures that parents of young children are literate and able to communicate for and with their children. This allows them to be active participants in their children’s early learning.

Literacy

Our Literacy Program is based on assessing and meeting the individual needs of each student. Our classes are fully customized to the student’s life goals. Our volunteers go beyond their roles as tutors, often becoming mentors and advisor for their students. Our program gives students sources of support and motivation to take advantage of opportunities offered by the local community.

ESL - English as a Second Language

The Literacy Council’s programs serve as a first step in language acquisition for non-English speakers. Our program offers complete assessment to determine the literacy level of the student. Our tutors are provided with all needed support and materials. Lesson plans are tailored to each Learner.

Tutor Training Workshops

The Literacy Council offers free workshops for certification as a volunteer tutor in both basic English literacy and English as a Second Language. These workshops are held once a month. Send an e-mail to [email protected] for more information on uncoming trainings. Click here to see the dates for upcoming training workshops!

Previous teaching experience is not necessary. All that is needed is the desire to help others. You will learn strategies to teach basic English language skills to both native and non-native English speaking adults. You may choose to tutor independently in your community or in a regional Literacy Learning Center.
